On Friday night me and my boy went on a date night to a recently opened restaurant in London called The Tramshed. There has been a hype around this restaurant since before it even opened, as it features the controversial new art piece by Damien Hirst. And this piece is a preserved in formaldehyde Hereford cow with a cockerel standing on its back, raised on a single huge plinth in the centre of the restaurant, which completely dominates the space. It is absolutely impressive and…. huge.
The chef’s - Mark Hix - concept is simple: he only serves chicken or steak, somehow suggesting that too much choice is simply not necessary. The food was lovely (I had steak salad, husb had the whole chicken), although in my opinion nothing extraordinary. However, it was a lovely place to go to for our anniversary dinner (we’ve been together for six years!).
Funny fact: I used to work in that building and I know this space so well, it was amazing to see how it got transformed into a restaurant! The building was built in 1905 and served as a shed for trams. It’s absolutely unique and it holds some dear memories in my heart!
Snapshots from our anniversary dinner last night at Oxo Tower Brasserie.
What an amazing date night it was. We started with a bottle of celebratory champagne in the bar, before moving outside to the terrace to have our meal. The food was delicious, and the views spectacular. I even got teary eyed at some point because I didn’t want this evening to end!
It was my husband’s brithday yesterday and I really wanted it to be special for him, as I’ve never been very good with his presents and surprises. So I made him breakfast, gave him presents (leather across-body bag and a Zara cardigan that he really liked), we watched a film and then in the afternoon got ready to hit the town.
He didn’t know where we were going - it was all a surprise! I told him that we were going for a drink to one place and then we would move somewhere else to eat. I managed to keep him off guard when we got to Knightsbridge and he realised that we were going to Mandarin Oriental bar.
He was positively surprised and when we finished our drinks, we got up and I told him I would pay at the bar so he could see the entrance to Dinner. We walked towards it, admiring the decor and then I just told the maître d’ that we’ve got a table booked. He was shocked but he was very pleased :-)

The atmosphere, the food and the experience were truly amazing - I’m so glad we went there. It felt like being blindfolded at times as we weren’t sure what to expect from the food we had on our plates!
We of course had to try the famous Meat Fruit (delicious!)…

And Broth of Lamb with veal sweetbreads…

Spiced Pigeon for my main course…

…and the amazing Tipsy Cake with spit roast pineapple (that was probably the most delicious cake I’ve EVER eaten!)

We also had Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream (delicious and so wacky!)

And complimentary chocolate ganache infused with Earl Grey tea

After dinner we also went out to Bar Boulud (also at Mandarin Oriental) for one last drink. Before heading home we had a quick walk around Knigthsbridge, had a look at Harrods and the neighbourhood.
In summary, I’m so glad we did all of this, not sure who was more excited about the whole thing - the birthday boy or me…? ;-)
